Staphylococcus aureus is a very common bacteria that often grows harmlessly on our skin. At first, it could be treated with penicillin, but then resistant strains appeared. When methicillin, a penicillin derivative, was developed to fight these strains, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) showed up. And MRSA's resistance to antibiotics keeps getting stronger - some strains are now resistant to almost all known treatments.

In the past, MRSA infections were mainly a problem in healthcare places. Surgical wounds, catheter and feeding tube insertion points, nasal passages, and urinary tracts are common infection spots. Now, MRSA is spreading to the general public, usually in groups with existing health issues or where there's a lot of skin-to-skin contact, like in prisons, sports teams, and military training. Healthy people's immune systems can usually fight off MRSA without antibiotics, but it can be life-threatening for the sick.

The best way to stop MRSA from spreading is simple - pay attention to hygiene, especially washing your hands. It's also really important to finish your prescribed antibiotics. If you stop as soon as you feel better, you might only kill the weaker bacteria, letting the more dangerous ones survive and grow. So, be a hygiene hero: stay clean and follow your doctor's advice.
